If you have furry friends at home, then you know that they are just as much a part of the family as your children, spouse, siblings and parents are. Therefore, we bet you would go to great lengths to keep them safe in a number of situations ? which brings us to today?s topic: National Pet Fire Safety Day.
Did you know that house fires affect approximately 50,000 pets annually? Additionally, pets themselves are deemed responsible for unintentionally starting nearly 1,000 fires annually. To join forces with those celebrating today?s observance, we wanted to offer a few tips to help you keep your cats, dogs ? you name it ? from starting a fire in your home:
Shield from open flames:aWe all love the scent of a lit candle, but pets are just as curious to see what the fuss is all about. To prevent your animals from knocking over a candle or other open flame, be sure to store them in a place that they can?t reach. Furthermore, you should never leave your candles or similar objects unattended when pets are around.
Properly place electrical cords:aDangling electrical cords can be extremely inviting for pets and ultimately become their next chew toy. However, cords that are damaged in this way are sure to be a fire hazard. Not to mention, they could be harmful to your pets due to the electric current that runs through them! When placing electronics around your home, pay close attention to where their cords wind up.
Take off your stove?s knobs:aAlthough it can be tedious to do, you should remove your stove?s knobs before you leave the house or when you aren?t close to the kitchen. Why? Stoves are often reported as a leading cause of pet related fires!
Once you?ve made your home pet-friendly for fire purposes, don?t forget to proceed with caution when it comes to your plumbing too! To prevent a clog in your tub or sink, be weary of how much of your pet?s hair goes down the drain when bathing them. Additionally, be mindful of how exposed some of your home?s pipes are ? although they may be heavy duty, the last thing you need is your pets to start gnawing at them whenever they get the chance!
At Barker and Sons Plumbing & Rooter, we want your pets to be kept just as safe as you are, which is why we hope you?ll keep these tips in mind! But of course, should you develop a plumbing problem that is somehow related to your pets, know that our team is always here to help in any way we can!
